5 warning signs that your computer needs servicing

A computer rarely fails overnight without warning. Most of the time it “hints” for a while that something is wrong. If you catch these signals early, you avoid not only frustration but often data loss and a far more expensive repair.
1. The computer has noticeably slowed down
If the system takes forever to start and even ordinary programs open slowly, it is not necessarily “old age”. The most common cause is a slow or filling-up hard drive (HDD), too many programs running in the background, or malware. On older computers the most effective solution is to replace the traditional hard drive with an SSD (ideally NVMe). It is a single change that revives a computer more than anything else, and often turns it into practically a new machine.
2. A noisy fan and overheating
When a computer roars like a vacuum cleaner or feels hot to the touch, clogged cooling is almost always behind it. Dust in the heatsinks and dried-out thermal paste block heat dissipation, the processor overheats and throttles itself to stay protected. Regular preventive maintenance, meaning cleaning and replacing the paste, is a cheap insurance that extends the life of your computer.
3. Spontaneous shutdowns and restarts
If a computer shuts down, restarts or “freezes” on its own, that is a more serious signal. The cause is usually overheating, a weakening power supply (PSU), faulty RAM or bulging capacitors on the board. These problems get worse over time and can damage other components, so it does not pay to put them off.
4. The blue screen and error messages
An occasional blue screen (BSOD) or recurring error messages mean a system conflict, bad drivers, faulty memory or a disk problem. A one-off occurrence happens, but if it keeps repeating you need to find the cause before the system gets damaged enough to require a complete reinstall.
5. Strange noises from the disk or disappearing files
Clicking or scratching from a traditional hard drive, or files that get unexpectedly corrupted or vanish, are alarming. This is often an early hard-drive failure that can be detected in time by checking the disk’s health (the so-called SMART values). At this stage the data can usually still be saved, but time is working against you. Back up your important files immediately and have the disk checked.
What to do about it
Most of these problems have a cheap and quick solution if they are caught early. If you notice any of these signs on your computer, get in touch with us. We will check the state of your computer, measure the temperatures and the health of the disk, and propose a solution before a small issue turns into an expensive repair or data loss.
