In a store today an AI label glows at you from every second laptop and the salesperson stresses the NPU and the Copilot+ badge. It costs more, and a fair question arises: do you actually get anything for it, or are you just paying extra for a buzzword? Let us break it down without the marketing.

What an NPU is

An NPU is a neural processing unit, a chip specialised for artificial intelligence computations. It sits right in the processor alongside the classic compute core (CPU) and the graphics (GPU). Its advantage is not raw power but efficiency: it handles AI tasks at far lower power draw, which saves the battery.

What AI PC and Copilot+ PC mean

  • AI PC is just a marketing name for a computer that has an NPU.
  • Copilot+ PC is a stricter bar from Microsoft. It requires an NPU with a performance of at least about 40 TOPS and further parameters, and it unlocks some AI features directly in Windows, such as better camera effects or live translation. We also cover related news in Copilot in Windows 11.

What an NPU actually does today

  • Video calls. Background blur, noise suppression and face lighting run more smoothly and more gently on the battery.
  • Live captions and translation directly on the device.
  • Privacy. Some AI features run locally without sending anything to the cloud, so they work even without the internet.

By contrast, demanding image or video generation still mostly runs on a powerful graphics card or in the cloud, not on the NPU.

TOPS and the numbers you see in ads

TOPS means trillions of operations per second and expresses the performance of an NPU. It sounds impressive, but a simple rule holds: a higher number need not mean a noticeable difference. In office work, browsing the web and video calls, an ordinary user simply will not feel the difference between 40 and 50 TOPS.

Who it is worth it for and when it is just marketing

It makes sense if:

  • you are buying a new laptop anyway and take the NPU as a bonus,
  • you work a lot through video calls,
  • you are interested in local AI and long battery life.

It does not make sense if:

  • you want to pay extra just for the label while doing classic office work,
  • you expect an NPU to speed up ordinary programs, games or Excel, it will not,
  • you plan demanding AI. For that a graphics card with enough memory is more important anyway.

How to decide when buying

The best advice is simple: do not buy a chip, buy a laptop. Look at battery life, the quality of the display and keyboard, processor performance, enough RAM and the weight. Let the NPU be a pleasant bonus, not the main reason. How to do it properly is covered in the article how to choose a laptop.
