Internet speed is not everything. With gaming and video calls, the response, that is the ping and latency, often matters more than speed. Let us explain what they are and how to test them easily.

What ping and latency are

Latency is the network’s response, that is how quickly data reaches the target and returns. It is measured in milliseconds (ms), and the rule is that the lower the number, the better. Ping is essentially a measurement of this response. Unlike download speed, which we write about in the article download vs upload, latency is about the network’s reaction, not the volume of data.

Why it matters

High latency shows where an instant reaction is needed: in gaming (a delay, so-called lag), video calls and VoIP. Even with fast internet, a high ping can ruin the experience.

How to test with an online speed test

The easiest is to open an online speed test (for example Speedtest or Fast.com), run the measurement and, besides the download and upload speed, note the ping or latency value. The test takes a few seconds and you immediately see where you stand.

How to test with the ping command

You measure latency more precisely directly with a command:

  • Windows: open the command prompt and type ping google.com or ping 8.8.8.8.
  • macOS and Linux: the same ping command in the terminal.

The result shows the time in ms for each reply and, at the end, the packet loss. You will find more about commands in the article on the command line. Besides latency, also watch the packet loss and the variation in response (jitter), which also spoil gaming and calls.

What values are good

  • Under 20 to 30 ms is excellent, typical of quality fiber.
  • Up to 50 ms is good.
  • 50 to 100 ms is average, usable.
  • Over 100 ms you will feel a delay in gaming. Satellite and some mobile connections have higher latency.

What worsens ping

  • Wifi instead of a cable. A wired connection has a lower and more stable latency.
  • A loaded network, when someone is downloading. QoS helps by prioritizing important traffic.
  • The distance to the server and the type of connection.

What to do about a high ping

Try connecting by cable instead of wifi, turn on QoS, connect to closer servers and check the connection quality. If the latency is permanently high even on a cable, the problem may be on the operator’s side or with the type of connection.
