How to speed up a slow phone: what really helps

A new phone flies, after a year or two it starts to stutter, and after a while longer you feel you are waiting for every tap. It is not chance, nor a sign you must immediately buy new. In the vast majority of cases a slow phone can be revived with a few steps you can do yourself. In this article we will go through them from the most effective to the last resort.

It is a similar story to computers, which we wrote about in how to speed up a slow computer. Here too it holds that you first find the cause and only then change anything.

Most effective: free up space

This is step number one and also the most common culprit. When storage is nearly full, the system has nowhere to put temporary data and the phone slows down noticeably. As a sensible rule, leave at least ten to fifteen percent of memory free.

Where space is lost most: photos and videos, downloaded files, offline maps and above all apps that gather data for years. Go through what you actually use and delete the rest. Before deleting, back up photos and videos so you do not lose them, then remove them from storage.

Clear cache and background apps

Apps store temporary data, the so-called cache, and over time it grows surprisingly large. In the storage settings you can clear it for individual apps, which frees space and often removes lag in a specific app.

Watch out for apps that run constantly in the background and use up performance and battery. Limit or uninstall the ones you do not need always active. And avoid the so-called boosters from the store, most of them run in the background themselves, show ads and do more harm than good.

Restart, updates and small things

It sounds banal, but a restart now and then really helps, it frees memory and ends stuck processes. If you have not turned the phone off in a long time, start with that.

Keep the system and apps updated, fixes often address smoothness and bugs that were slowing things down. And if you want a seemingly snappier feel, in the developer options you can shorten or turn off the transition animations, after which the system feels faster.

Overheating and the battery

It is not only about software. When a phone overheats, the system deliberately throttles performance to cool down, so it lags precisely under load or in the sun. Do not leave it in direct sun or a hot car, and take off a thick case if it gets very warm.

An ageing battery has a similar effect: when it can no longer deliver enough power, the system slows down so the phone does not shut off. If your device drops percentages quickly and is slow on top of that, a worn battery may be part of the problem, and replacing it helps both performance and battery life.

The last software option: a reset

When ordinary cleaning is not enough and the phone is still slow, the strongest software step is a factory reset. It wipes years of buildup and the device behaves almost like new. There is a catch though: it erases all data.

So before a reset, always make a backup following our guide to backing up your phone. Treat it as the last software card, not the first step, but when you play it, the result tends to be dramatic.

When only another solution helps

If the device is old, still slow after cleaning and a reset, and the battery lasts only a while, it is simply near the limit of what it can do. Then a battery replacement or considering a newer device makes more sense than another round of cleaning.
