HDR10 vs HDR10+ vs Dolby Vision: what is the difference

The TV box shouts “4K HDR”, reviews keep mentioning Dolby Vision and Netflix shows mysterious logos next to films. Which of it is marketing and which is actually visible? In this comparison we explain in plain terms what HDR does to the picture, how HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision differ, and what to base your choice on so you do not pay extra for logos.
What HDR actually does
HDR (High Dynamic Range) solves the screen’s eternal problem: the real world has a far wider brightness range than a display can show. Classic SDR video assumes around 100 nits; HDR content is mastered at 1,000 to 4,000 nits. In practice that means:
- highlights shine: sun glinting on water or an explosion has real punch,
- shadows keep detail: a dark cellar is not a black rectangle but a space with texture,
- more colour: HDR goes hand in hand with a wider colour space (10-bit and up), so skies show no banding and skin looks natural.
Important: HDR is not a switch, it is a chain. Content must be produced in HDR, the format must carry it and the TV must be physically able to display it. The weakest link decides.
HDR10: the baseline everyone has
HDR10 is an open, royalty-free format supported by practically every HDR TV, console and player. It uses static metadata: brightness and contrast information is set once for the whole film. That is also its weakness. If a film has one extremely bright scene, everything else must accommodate it and dark passages can lose detail.
Treat HDR10 as the reliable common denominator: every HDR device speaks it, nothing breaks on it, but do not expect peak quality.
Dolby Vision and HDR10+: tuning scene by scene
Both newer formats add dynamic metadata: the instructions for the TV change scene by scene, even frame by frame. A dark night scene gets different treatment than a sunny beach and detail survives in both.
- Dolby Vision is Dolby’s licensed format. It supports up to 12-bit colour depth, is mastered up to 10,000 nits and has the broadest support in streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+) and on discs. TV makers pay a licence fee, which is why the cheapest models skip it.
- HDR10+ is the royalty-free alternative backed mainly by Samsung and Amazon. Technically it does the same job (dynamic metadata, 10-bit), but content support is narrower; you will find it mostly on Prime Video and from selected publishers.
Why the split? Samsung avoids paying for Dolby Vision and pushes HDR10+, most other brands offer Dolby Vision and many nowadays both. The player and the TV always negotiate the best common format; when the dynamic one is missing, the picture falls back to HDR10. Nothing “breaks”, you just lose the finer tuning.
HLG: HDR for broadcast
The fourth format stands slightly apart. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) was developed by broadcasters BBC and NHK for traditional transmission: it uses no metadata and the same signal renders correctly on SDR and HDR sets alike. You will meet it in sports and satellite or terrestrial broadcasts. It is not a buying factor; practically every HDR model supports it.

What really matters when buying
The format logo is only half the story. The first half is the panel:
- Real brightness. Proper HDR starts at roughly 600 nits, a cinematic experience at 1,000. Budget TVs with 250 to 300 nits “support” HDR only on paper; after switching to HDR the picture is often paradoxically dimmer and worse than SDR.
- Contrast and dimming. OLED panels solve contrast perfectly (every pixel lights itself), good LED TVs need local dimming with enough zones. We compare panel technologies in display types compared.
- Formats matching your content. Mostly Netflix and Disney+? Dolby Vision takes priority. Living on Prime Video with a Samsung? HDR10+ serves you fine. The ideal TV supports both.
- Gaming details. Consoles and Windows use HDR10 (and on PC, Auto HDR adds HDR to older games); newer TVs handle Dolby Vision even at 4K/120 Hz for Xbox.
