Linux vs Windows vs macOS: who each is for and what software

Three operating systems, three worlds. Windows, macOS and Linux differ not only in looks but also in who they suit and what software runs on them. Let us compare them and, above all, show what you can replace well-known programs with in each system.
The three systems in brief
- Windows is the most widespread. Almost all software and games run on it, and it has the broadest device compatibility.
- macOS from Apple is prized for smoothness, design and the ecosystem, favored especially by people in creative professions.
- Linux is free, secure and undemanding. It rules servers, suits reviving an old computer and is loved by those who want control and privacy.
Who each is for
- Windows: games, the broadest compatibility, business and specialized software.
- macOS: creative work (video, music, graphics), those who like the Apple ecosystem.
- Linux: servers, developers, older computers, an emphasis on privacy and zero cost.
Software alternatives
This is the most practical part. Most tasks can be solved in every system, just with a different program:
| Purpose | Windows | macOS | Linux / cross-platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office | Microsoft Office | iWork, Office | LibreOffice, Google Docs |
| Photo editing | Photoshop | Photoshop, Affinity | GIMP, Krita |
| Video | Premiere | Final Cut, iMovie | DaVinci Resolve, Kdenlive |
| Browser | Edge, Chrome | Safari, Chrome | Firefox, Chrome |
| Outlook | Thunderbird | ||
| Player | Windows Media | QuickTime | VLC (everywhere) |
| Acrobat | Preview | Okular, Acrobat |

Does it run everywhere? Compatibility
Many programs today are cross-platform, so they work the same in all systems: Chrome, Firefox, VLC, Spotify, Zoom or Microsoft Office itself. Some, however, are tied to one system. Demanding games are best on Windows, Final Cut and Logic run only on Mac, and some business software exists only for Windows. Linux has a quality alternative for almost everything, but check the specific programs you need.
Migration between systems
Moving from one system to another can be managed. Data (documents, photos, music) is portable and most cloud services work everywhere. You just have to get used to different controls and find replacements for programs not present in the new system. An overview of keyboard shortcuts also helps.
How to choose
- You want certainty, games and maximum compatibility: Windows.
- You do creative work and like the Apple ecosystem: macOS.
- You want free, secure and to revive an older machine: Linux.
