Reinstalling Windows: when and how to do it

Sometimes a computer is so slowed down or infected that cleaning it up no longer makes sense, and the best solution is to reinstall Windows. It makes the system a clean and fresh machine again. Let us explain when it is worth it and how to do it so you do not lose data.
When reinstalling is worth it
- The system is slow long-term and ordinary speedups no longer help.
- The computer is seriously infected and removing viruses is not enough.
- Errors and crashes pile up that cannot be fixed.
- You are selling or handing over the computer and want a clean system.
Most important: back up first
Never skip this. Reinstalling wipes the disk’s contents, so back up all your data in advance: documents, photos, passwords, bookmarks and program licenses. How to do this is in the article on backing up. Without a backup, reinstalling is the fastest way to lose data.
Three routes: reset, clean install, in-place repair
Windows offers three options depending on how big a problem you are solving:
- A reset (Reset this PC) in the system settings. It reinstalls Windows and optionally keeps the files. It is the simplest and needs no USB stick.
- A clean install from a USB stick. It completely wipes the disk and installs the system anew, without old errors and leftovers. It is the most thorough and recommended for serious problems or before selling a computer.
- An in-place repair (in-place upgrade) run from the installation media right inside Windows. It reinstalls the system files but keeps programs and data. It is handy when the system misbehaves yet you do not want to install everything again.
Preparing before the install
Besides the backup, get a few things ready so you are not stuck after the install:
- The license key or sign-in to the Microsoft account the license is tied to.
- Drivers for the network card or Wi-Fi, ideally downloaded in advance. Without internet you would have nowhere to get them after the install.
- Program installers and the login details you will need.
The clean install procedure in brief
- Back up the data.
- Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s site and use it to create an installation USB stick with Windows.
- Boot the computer from the USB (via the boot menu) and install the system.
- Install drivers (graphics, network, sound) if the system does not find them itself.
- Install programs and restore data from the backup.
After the install: what not to forget
Right after installing, run Windows Update and download all updates, because a fresh system tends to be outdated and without patches. Check the drivers in Device Manager (no exclamation marks). The factory or system often leaves behind preinstalled bloatware, that is trial and promotional programs you can safely uninstall. Finally, set up backups again so you are covered at the next reinstall.
Activation and license
On newer computers the Windows license tends to be tied to the hardware, so the system activates itself after reinstalling. If you have a separate license key, keep it handy. When moving from Windows 10 to 11, check the device’s support.
