Game console servicing: how to look after your PS5 and Xbox

Game consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X are small, powerful computers. And just like computers, they get clogged with dust, overheat and wear out over time. There are a few signs you should not ignore if you want your console to serve you quietly for a long time.
Overheating and noise are the first warning
When a console runs louder than before or gets hot and shuts itself down during games, the cause is almost always clogged cooling. Dust in the fan and dried-out thermal paste prevent heat from being carried away. The console overheats and, in the worst case, shuts down to protect itself.
The solution is disassembly, thorough cleaning and repasting of the processor. After the job, the console is usually significantly quieter and cooler, which extends its lifespan.
Common faults we can repair
- Damaged HDMI port - one of the most common faults, where the console stops outputting an image. It can be replaced without replacing the whole console.
- Power problems - the console will not turn on or shuts down suddenly.
- Disc drive and disc reading, worn controllers (stick drift) and other common faults.
- Slow loading and full storage - we can expand the storage (a PS5 via an internal NVMe M.2 drive with a heatsink, an Xbox Series via the official expansion card).
How to look after your console
- Place it in an open space, not in an enclosed cabinet, so it has enough air for cooling.
- Keep it away from dusty environments and carpet, which draws in dust.
- Update the system and games regularly.
- Have it cleaned every now and then, just like a computer.
