A computer that worked fine for years suddenly starts behaving oddly. In the morning it will not turn on, in the afternoon it slows down to the point of pain, or a blue screen jumps out at you in the middle of your work. At that moment most people have no idea whether it is a five-minute trifle or something that could cost them their data.

This article is a guide. Over the years in the workshop we have written separate how-tos for the most common problems, and here they are all in one place. Find your situation, click through and let us sort it out.

When the computer acts up

First you need to figure out what the computer is actually telling you. Sometimes it only hints with five small signs, other times it confronts you with a blue screen (BSOD) that looks worse than it usually is. And when it does not boot at all, it often comes down to a few steps you can do yourself.

A slow computer

Slowness is the most annoying problem, but also the most rewarding to fix. In the vast majority of cases a switch to an SSD is enough and the old machine comes back to life so well you will not recognise it. Sometimes it is just choked by a pile of apps that launch at Windows startup that you did not even know about.

Maintenance and cleaning

This is the boring but important part. Dust in the heatsink and dried-out paste turn a powerful machine into a radiator that throttles itself. Regular preventive maintenance is cheaper than a repair, and we do it on our own machines at home too, so we are happy to recommend it. When cleaning, use a compressor carefully, otherwise you will do more harm than good.

Data rescue and transfer

This is the section where time matters most to us. If you have spilled something on your electronics, turn the computer off at once and do not turn it back on until it dries, that can decide whether the machine survives. And when you buy a new one, transferring data from the old one is often simpler than you think.

Reinstallation and recycling

Sometimes the cleanest solution is to start over. A fresh Windows reinstallation removes years of buildup and the machine behaves like the day you bought it. And when an old computer has truly reached the end, recycle it sensibly, not in the bin.

When to leave it to us

You can handle a lot of these guides yourself, and we are glad if they help. But there are moments when it is wiser not to touch it: when it involves data you cannot afford to lose, when the computer beeps and will not boot, or when you simply do not feel like taking the risk. In those cases it is cheaper and calmer to bring it to us.

We offer repair and service as well as a no-obligation check and diagnostics, so we first find out what is wrong with the computer and only then do you decide. If you are not sure where your situation fits, get in touch and we will advise you.
