Does your call drop in the cellar, do you not even have one bar of signal in the basement, and are you heard in pieces when calling at home? The solution is VoWiFi, that is calling over wifi. Thanks to it you can call even where there is no mobile signal at all. Let us explain how it works.

Why you have a weak signal

A mobile signal is weakened by thick walls, concrete, metal and being underground. In a basement, cellar or a house far from the transmitter, there is little or no signal. This cannot be worked around with a stronger phone, because the signal simply does not reach there.

The solution: VoWiFi (wifi calling)

VoWiFi (Wi-Fi Calling) means the phone uses the home wifi for calls and texts instead of the mobile network. When the mobile signal is weak, the phone quietly switches to wifi and you call completely normally on your number. The other side does not even notice the difference.

What it needs

  • A phone that supports VoWiFi (most newer ones do).
  • An operator that offers this service and has it activated for you.
  • Working wifi with an internet connection in that spot.

How to turn VoWiFi on

  • Android: in Settings, look for the networks or calls section and turn on Wi-Fi Calling.
  • iPhone: Settings, Cellular, Wi-Fi Calling.

If you do not see the option, it is usually because the operator has not activated it, or the phone does not support it. Then it is enough to contact the operator.

It works even deep underground

This is the main advantage. Even in a basement deep underground, where there is no mobile signal at all, you can call completely normally if you bring wifi there. You solve the connection to the basement with a cable, a mesh system or powerline adapters, and VoWiFi takes care of the rest.

If VoWiFi is not enough

If you do not even have wifi, or need signal on several devices, mobile signal boosters also come into consideration, but they have their rules and sometimes need to be handled with the operator. The simplest and most reliable is to bring good wifi to the problem spot.
