Windows Sandbox: safely try a program in isolation

Have you downloaded a program from an unknown source and do not know whether it is safe? Windows has a feature that lets you try it without risk to your system. It is called Windows Sandbox. Let us explain what it is and how it works.
What Windows Sandbox is
Windows Sandbox is a Windows feature that runs a clean, isolated and disposable Windows in a window on your desktop. It is like having a second computer inside yours for a moment. Whatever you run in the sandbox is separated from your real system.
The best part is that after you close it, everything in the sandbox is irreversibly deleted. No program, file or possible infection remains. The next time you start it, you get a clean system again.
What it is good for
- Trying a suspicious program. You run an unknown installer in the sandbox and watch what it does, without risk to your system.
- Opening an uncertain attachment. You would rather open a dubious file from email in isolation. This relates to the article phishing and fraudulent emails.
- Testing software once. You try a program and after closing no clutter remains in the system.
It is a practical safeguard that complements antivirus and the Smart App Control feature.
How to turn on Windows Sandbox
The sandbox is built in, it just needs to be activated:
- Open Turn Windows features on or off (you find it via search).
- In the list, check Windows Sandbox and confirm.
- After a restart you find Windows Sandbox in the Start menu and run it like an ordinary app.
Then you simply copy the suspicious file into it and try it out.
What you need for it
- Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise. In the Home edition Sandbox is not included by default.
- Virtualization enabled in the BIOS. It is usually on, otherwise you enable it in the settings, more in the article how to enter the BIOS.
- Enough memory and space, since it is a separate system in a window.
What the limits are
- It is not one hundred percent protection. In rare cases sophisticated malware can bypass the isolation. The sandbox significantly reduces the risk, but it does not replace caution.
- It is not permanent. Everything is deleted after closing, so you do not save anything in it permanently.
- Not everything works in it. Some programs do not run in isolation exactly the same as on an ordinary system.
If the computer is already infected, the sandbox will not help, then help with an infected computer is needed.
Conclusion
Windows Sandbox is a handy security feature that lets you safely try a suspicious program or file in a clean, isolated and disposable Windows. After closing, everything is deleted, so your system stays untouched. You need Windows 11 Pro and virtualization enabled. It is not perfect protection, but it is an excellent safeguard for careful users.
