Slow computer? Why it happens and how to speed it up
Startup takes minutes, the browser stutters and the cursor jumps? A slow computer does not have to mean a new one. Often a few targeted steps are enough.
A slow computer is one of the most common reasons people contact us. The good news is that in most cases it can be noticeably sped up without buying a new machine.
The most common cause: an old drive
If the computer still has a classic hard drive (HDD), that is almost always the main culprit. A mechanical drive is the slowest part of a modern computer and holds everything else back. Switching to an SSD is by far the cheapest and most effective upgrade; afterwards the computer feels brand new. More in is it worth switching to an SSD.
Too little memory (RAM)
When many tabs and programs are open at once and the computer is short on RAM, it starts offloading data to the slow drive and everything slows down. Adding memory is often a cheap, quick fix. How much you need is covered in how to choose RAM.
A cluttered system and background programs
- Too many programs starting with the computer lengthens startup and eats memory. Many of them you do not need.
- Forgotten and unnecessary software (bloatware), browser toolbars and unfinished updates burden the system.
- A full drive. When the system drive is nearly full, the computer slows down.
Regular computer maintenance helps with cleaning and optimisation.
Overheating and dust
Clogged cooling and dried thermal paste cause overheating, and the computer deliberately slows down (throttling) to protect itself. Cleaning and repasting helps.
Viruses and malware
Sometimes the slowdown is caused by an infected computer or hidden mining or ad software running in the background.
How we help
We will professionally check, speed up and clean the computer and advise whether it just needs a small fix or a cheap upgrade (SSD, memory) is worth it. You get the price up front. Get in touch and let us bring your computer back to life.
